/Dr. Campillo’s story

(In the year 1795)

“… the Catalan scientist Don Francisco Salva i Campillo

suggested (to the Spanish Academy of Science)

a method of long-distance communication

making use of a separate wire for each letter of the alphabet.

Each wire began at a source of electricity.

Each wire ended at a human holding the wire.

Upon receiving an electrical shock,

the peasant would call out

the name of the letter of the alphabet assigned!”

Besides being a scientist,

Campillo was a physician and was considered a medical prodigy.

Can we imagine that

Dr. Campillo

enjoyed leeching and bleeding his patients?
